The African Development Bank (AfDB), as the premier developmental organization in the continent, supports its 54 regional member countries to reduce levels of poverty and boost economic and social progress. Reliable and timely data are vital not only for formulating the AfDB’s own strategies, and for monitoring the outcomes of its programs and projects, but also for all those who wish to ensure the continent’s future positive growth trajectory. This includes key policymakers in African countries, central banks and non-governmental organizations, subregional and regional organizations, UN agencies, multinational organizations, as well as external donors and investors.
The National Institute of Statistics of Cameroon launched the Statistical Data Portal
Cameroon has officially launched its ESTA-funded Data Portals and thus formally welcoming her unto the African Information Highway (AIH). The Launch took place on Wednesday, February 26 at the Hilton Hotel in Yaoundé. The event was jointly hosted by the Bank’s Resident Representative in Cameroon, Mr. Racine Kane, and Cameroon’s Director General of Statistics Mr. Joseph Tedou. This cross-beneficiary platform was launched before a diverse audience that included some Cameroonian academics, government officials, private sector agencies, multilateral development partners, as well as representatives from the media. Mr. Racine Kane made the opening remarks to the audience, congratulating the National Statistics Institute for its excellent support of Statistics and formally welcoming Cameroon to the African Information Highway.
The AIH is Africa’s first “one-stop” data center. It is a revolutionary data management and dissemination platform that will impact how data is collected, stored and ultimately used by anyone who accesses it. The AIH was developed with the overall objective to increase public access to official and other statistics across Africa, while at the same time providing support to African countries to improve data quality, management and dissemination. The AIH also responds to the AfDB’s own demand for timely data to monitor the development impact of its interventions on the continent and to ensure that these are in line with the Bank’s Ten Year Strategy for 2013-2022.
